Google to pay publishers for news content

On June 25, Google announced a licensing program to paypublishers for “high-quality content” for a news experience launching later in2020. The program will help participating publishers monetize their contentthrough an enhanced storytelling experience that lets people go deeper intomore complex stories, stay informed and be exposed to a world of differentissues and interests, says Google. The program is starting with local andnational publications in Germany,Australia and Brazil
The productwill launch first on Google News and Discover. Google plans to sign morepartners in the coming months, says the tech giant.

As the world’s largest technology manufacturersincreasingly move toward creating products that are designed to be difficult orimpossible to repair, Motherboard has started looking toward the margins oftech to find the people keeping older machines alive and running. 

In the firstepisode of State of Repair, we visited the New York Times printing plant tomeet Greg Zerafa, Jerry Greaney, and Chris Bedetto, who are part of a dyingbreed of machinists that keeps the newspaper's eight three-story printing presseshumming and spitting out hundreds of thousands of newspapers every single day.



Ponderay Newsprint closes


Ponderay Newsprint has closed its paper mill in Usk,Washington, The Spokesman-Review (Spokanereported.
Ponderay isa partnership between Lake Superior Forest Products, a subsidiary ofQuebec-based Resolute Forest Products, and five major U.S.publishers, says the Ponderay website. The mill produces newsprint forpublishers along the West Coast and in the Midwestern U.S. and exports tomarkets in Asia and South America.
The millopened in 1989. More than 130 people have worked there, according to theSpokesman-Review.

What was to be a 7-day streetcar strike began in Chicago after several workers were unfairly fired. Wrote the police chief at the time, describing the strikers’ response to scabs: “One of my men said he was at the corner of Halsted and Madison Streets, and although he could see fifty stones in the air, he couldn’t tell where they were coming from.” The strike was settled to the workers’ satisfaction. – 1885
7 day streetcar strike begins in Chicago, Michael Schwab was convicted for the Haymarket Bombing, FDR establishes the Nation Labor Relations Board, and the Supreme Court ruled in CWA v. Beck.CLICK TO TWEET
Michael Schwab, who was convicted for the Haymarket bombing, died from tuberculosis, having been pardoned and released from prison just a few months prior. – 1898
An Executive Order signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the National Labor Relations Board.  A predecessor organization, the National Labor Board, established by the Depression-era National Industrial Recovery Act in 1933, was struck down by the Supreme Court. – 1934
IWW struck Weyerhaeuser and other Idaho lumber camps. – 1936
Jesus Pallares, founder of the 8,000-member coal miners union, Liga Obrera de Habla Esanola, was deported from the US as an “undesirable alien.” One hundred miners were arrested during the 1934 La Liga strike against the Gallup American Company in New Mexico. – 1936
The Boilermaker and Blacksmith unions merged to become International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Blacksmiths, Forgers and Helpers. – 1954
